Groups & Organizations Retired third generation editor for The Waterloo-Republic Times and its predecessor, The Waterloo Republican. Literally grew up in the newspaper business since the family’s living quarters adjoined the office, where he began hanging around as soon as he was tall enough to reach the knob of the office door. He learned to feed press and set type while he was still in grade school and began writing for the newspaper while he was in high school, during World War II, compiling a column of news about local men and women serving in the armed forces. After graduation from high school served in post-World War II U.S. Army of Occupation in Korea. Graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri; member Kappa Tau Alpha, honorary journalism fraternity. August 5, 1950, married high school sweet heart Dorothy Kathryn (Pat) Quernheim. After college he worked for The Waterloo Republican, becoming editor after the death of his father in 1962. Did a local news radio broadcast directly from Waterloo on KSGM, Ste. Genevieve, MO., during the 1950’s and 60’s. Also did play-by-play broadcasts of Waterloo High School basketball games. Retired 1992. Enjoyed his hobbies of photography and travel. Served as volunteer editor of the St. Clement Hospital newspaper “Spirit.” Helped organize the Waterloo Optimist Club and was its first president. Helped organize the Waterloo Park District and served on its board of commissioners for 24 years, a period during which the district developed Konarcik Park and built the swimming pool in Koenigsmark Park; Held the offices of secretary and president. Past President of the Illinois Press Association; Southern Illinois Editorial Association; Southern Illinois Professional Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, professional journalism fraternity; Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, Waterloo Optimist Club. Named to Southern Illinois University Journalism Hall of Fame. Director Emeritus, First National Bank of Waterloo.
