H. Quernheim Company (known today as Quernheim Funeral Home) was founded in Maeystown, in 1858,
by Balthasar Heinrich Quernheim who immigrated to America from Lundn,
Westphalia, Germany in 1854. As a skilled cabinetmaker he was called upon to
make coffins. In our area, prior to 1930, funerals and visitations were held in
the family’s residence. The first funeral parlor was opened in Waterloo in 1930.
The funeral home moved again in 1937 and once more in 1988, to it's current
location. The Quernheim Funeral Home is still family owned and operated by the
fourth, fifth, and sixth generations.
