It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elva Louise Baker, lovingly known as “Aunt Lou,” who departed this life on Monday, July 28th, at the age of 87.
Born on October 28, 1937, to John Henry and Elva Lee Kueper, Aunt Lou grew up in Springfield, Illinois, alongside her sister Rena and brothers Paul and Charlie.
On November 26, 1955, she married the love of her life, Donald E. Baker of Beecher City, Illinois. Though they never had children of their own, their enduring bond and spirited adventures made them the family’s cherished “power couple” for 58 unforgettable years.
Aunt Lou often reminisced about the race cars they shared, the thrills of the racetrack, and the memories they made with dear friends. She spent over 25 years devotedly working for the Springfield Telephone Company before retiring, bringing the same diligence and grace to her work as she did to her home.
She had a rare magic—one that could turn an almost-empty fridge into a feast, made anyone feel heard, and was always there to help anyone who needed her. Her generosity knew no bounds: if you admired something she owned, chances are she would’ve handed it to you with a smile. Whether it was a shirt, her shoes, a purse, a TV, or even her kitchen table, she gave freely and lovingly.
In her final years, Aunt Lou relished quiet comforts: being pampered, watching the hummingbirds while sitting by the pool, spending time with family, embracing her role as the world’s most adored GiGi, and never missing a Sunday NASCAR race.
She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and selfless love that will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew her.
Aunt Lou will be laid to rest by Uncle Don on Friday, August 15, 12:00 pm at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, IL.
