Martin W. Oliver, 88, of Waterloo, IL, died June 24, 2026, in Waterloo, IL. He was born August 16, 1937, in Steeleville, IL.
Martin Oliver passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to family, education, and community.
Born and raised in Steeleville, Illinois, Martin went on to attend Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he earned a master’s degree in education. At SIUC he met his wife. Martin married Nancy Oliver nee Pabst, with whom he shared nearly 60 wonderful years of marriage until her passing in 2020. Together they built a loving family. Also preceded in death by a granddaughter Jenette Oliver.
He is survived by his children, Gary Oliver (Joan Oliver nee Wolbeck) and Dana Mitchell (Bryan Mitchell); his grandchildren, Tessa Anne Oliver, Blake Oliver (Alysa), Luke Oliver (Abbie), Katarina Oliver, Caleb Rotz, Bekka Mitchell, and Anthony Mitchell; and his great-grandchild, Matthias Oliver, with a great-granddaughter expected in August, and a sister Lois Schnepel.
Martin devoted 32 years to teaching at Waterloo High School, where he made a lasting impact on generations of students. In addition to his work in the classroom, he also served the community as a coordinator of adult education through Belleville Area College in Waterloo for several years. Known for his strong work ethic, he spent his summers painting houses while teaching, and after retiring from education, he continued to stay active by working at the Waterloo Do-It Center. Member of Waterloo Lions Club 20+ year member and past president.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures, including attending Tuesday night band concerts, working in his yard, watching ballgames, and spending time with friends and family.
Martin Oliver will be remembered for his kindness, humor, dedication, and the lasting impact he had on those who knew him.
