Steven “Steve” P. Schmeltz, 69, of Chesterfield, MO, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 9, 2026, after a short battle with metastatic melanoma. He was born in Red Bud, IL on April 9, 1957, to the late Carl H. and Imogene (nee Dodson) Schmeltz. Steve grew up in Waterloo, IL.
He attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and graduated with a degree in Agricultural Sciences. On April 13th, 1985, Steve married Katherine “Kathy” Telposky. Together they built a wonderful life and family. Steve is survived by his wife Kathy, two children Amanda (John III) Bell, Justin (Ashley) Schmeltz, and grandson John Bell IV. Steve is also survived by his sisters and brother Kathleen Oberto, Elaine (Michael) Williams, and Glenn (Denise) Schmeltz, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Steve never knew a stranger and was kind to everyone he encountered. He loved his family more than anything. He was a huge sports fan and enjoyed cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals.
He is preceded in death by his parents Carl H. and Imogene Lucille (nee Dodson) Schmeltz and his brother David Schmeltz.
The family sends heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful doctors and the incredible nursing staff at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. We cannot thank you enough for your compassionate care.
