William Leslie Hanks, 83, of Waterloo, IL, died September 12, 2025, in Waterloo, IL. He was born September 14, 1941, in St. Louis, MO.
He is survived by his children Brandon (Gabrielle) Hanks, Matthew (Tami) Hanks, Michael (Nicole) Hanks, and Calen (Jacquie) Hanks; grandchildren William Hanks, Adam and Taylor Hanks, Megan, Ryan, and Lauren Hanks, and Kathryn, Violet, Jack, and Paul Hanks; sisters Paula Smith and Emilie Marlinghaus; and brother Jonathan Hanks.
He is preceded in death by his wife Scottye Lou Hanks (nee Vincent); parents Paul and Violet (nee Swor) Hanks; and brother Michael Hanks.
William dedicated his life to both the practice of law and the pursuit of his many passions. A proud graduate of St. Louis University School of Law, he served as Assistant State's Attorney in St Clair County, IL, before continuing his legal career with several respected law firms. Beyond his professional accomplishments, William was a man of many talents. He was an outstanding singer with a deep love for gospel music, a gifted athlete who enjoyed countless tennis matches with his sons, and a prolific writer. His energy, creativity, and devotion to both his family and his craft left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
